JWOD Employee Awards

JWOD Employee Awards Icon

Each year, NIB and NISH present awards to current JWOD employees and graduates of the JWOD Program in honor of their success. These awards are presented at NIB's and NISH's annual training conferences. For more information on these awards, please contact NIB or NISH.

The Peter J. Salmon Direct Labor Employee Award

This award, named after the late Peter J. Salmon, who was instrumental in passing the 1938 Wagner-O'Day Act, is presented to honor a JWOD employee who demonstrates outstanding work ethic and achievement.

2007 Peter J. Salmon Direct Labor Employee Award Recipient — Dennis Runyan

The Milton J. Samuelson Career Achievement Award

Milton J. Samuelson, former director of NIB and past executive director of Chicago Lighthouse, was a leader in the blindness field and advocate for upward mobility and placement programs benefiting persons who are visually impaired. This award is given for leadership in the blindness field, and is presented to an individual who is blind and works in an indirect labor position for an NIB-associated agency or a company featuring competitive positions.

William Miller Usdane Award

Dr. William M. Usdane, who helped create NISH, had a distinguished and diverse career in rehabilitation and was a leader in the movement to provide vocational opportunities to people with severe disabilities. This award is presented to a JWOD employee in recognition of workplace success and community commitment.

2006 William M. Usdane Award Recipients

Evelyne Villines Award for Excellence in the Workplace

Evelyne Villines is a leading national spokesperson and advocate for people with disabilities. She served on the NISH Board of Directors for 20 years and has been a member of the Committee for Purchase From People Who Are Blind or Severely Disabled since 1994. This award recognizes the outstanding achievement of a person with a disability who was able to utilize the opportunities and training afforded by the JWOD Program to gain greater independence through employment.
